We have many days that people come in and complain about their significant other keeping them up grinding their teeth. It happens more than I’d ever would have imagined in the past. Oftentimes, something like that can be treated very simply with a nightguard occlusal splint, which is something somewhat similar to a retainer that is just worn at sleep time, and we can oftentimes eliminate that grinding and provide better comfort for the jaw and the jaw joint, and the whole apparatus there. It’s a fairly noninvasive type process, and it helps an awful lot of people.
When someone grinds their teeth, there’s a lot of negative things that can come from that. It can be as simple as keeping their partner up at night, and that can be pretty negative too, but we look at it from the dental, the oral health standpoint. Basically, it’s a like a chronic low-grade problem that occurs that leads to failure. Many teeth fracture, bone level that supports the teeth can be affected, the gums can be affected. So it may seem like a very small factor, someone that grinds their teeth occasionally in their sleep, but there are some very, very significant adverse reactions to that, that have an effect on their lifelong ability to chew.
A lot of times, if it’s fairly early on in the process, it can be treated with a pretty simple appliance or device and take care of everything. If we don’t go that route and it gets further involved, we lead to teeth fracturing, we lead to potentially abscessed teeth, split teeth need to be removed, and we’re looking at possible implant treatment or something that we’re going to have to replace what we initially were given. So it’s extremely important to take that time to treat it properly and treat it very noninvasively on the front end, or we’re going to lead to some pretty significant problems down the line that become very time consuming to correct, potentially very expensive to correct as well. So a simple appliance can save an awful lot of heartache on that.

Imagine a Life Free From Jaw Pain
Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are located on both sides of your head. These joints make it possible for you to open and close your mouth. If they become irritated, simple activities like eating, talking, and yawning can cause you a great deal of pain. You can even experience pain in other areas of your face and near your ears.
The good news is that a comfortable appliance – custom-made for you – can provide relief. During your examination, Dr. Miner will determine if your pain is TMJ-related. If it is, we can craft a special night guard for you to wear while sleeping.
This device will gently move your lower jaw forward to ease the tension on your TMJ. Although the movement is slight, it will be enough to help the joints relax – so that the rest of your body can relax, too. The first night you wear your new night guard might be the best night of sleep you’ve had in a while!
Plus, your night guard will help stop you from grinding your teeth. Over time, teeth grinding can cause significant damage to your tooth enamel that could require restorative dental work.
If your pain seems like you might require surgery or another type of specialized care, Dr. Miner will refer you to a trusted specialist for a second opinion.
